At the end of the 1950s, Porsche began to think about a successor to the original Porsche, the 356. A task that dragged on longer than expected, because on the one hand the 356 still sold very well. On the other hand, a number of variants were created until the final shape emerged under the handdrawing of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. After the 901 celebrated its premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1963, it took a little under a year for Peugeot to notice the new model from Zuffenhausen: the French had all three-digit type designations protected with a zero in the middle.

The type designation 901 was therefore only of short duration. The 901 was renamed to 911. Officially no 901 was privately owned - Porsche had scrapped the majority of the 82 vehicles built and sold the rest only to employees. To date, little is known about these predecessors of a legendary series.

The book “Porsche 901” attempts to describe the vehicles that got today's myth 911 up and running. One of the highlights of the book is the story of a 901 barn find from California, the loving restoration of which is documented in detail.
