In 1976, in order to support the commercial ambitions of the all-new 924, especially for the United States and the specialist press, Porsche decide to make it a speed record breaking car. Largely lightened, from 1100 kg to 980 kg, with a 240 hp Turbo engine twice as powerful as the original and a cx of 0.268, the car is quickly ready.

Its goal: 280 km / h over 10000 miles, on an oval circuit located in the state of Ohio, USA. A first change of strategy displaces the attempt on the circuit of Nardo, in Italy, property of Porsche. As the date of the speed record approaches, Mercedes-Benz, whose C111 is almost exclusively a record breaking car, become alarmed and announces its future developments.

Porsche management realizes that it is not interesting to start a record race against its neighbor, and decides at the last moment to cancel its attempt. The 924 takes directly the path to the Porsche Museum.
