From the end of the 1960s and until 1971, Porsche dominated the International Constructors' Championship. The first victories of the Porsche 917 are generally associated with this period, in particular at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. But we shouldn't forget the contribution of the 908 to this complete supremacy. Indeed, the Porsche 908, through its convertible versions 908 /02 and 908/03 spyder, had a mission to support the 917 on rather winding and slow tracks like the Nürburgring or the Targa Florio. Lighter and shorter than the 917 - the 908/03 weighed only 500 kg while the 917K weighed 840 kg - this model was successful whenever a high top speed was not crucial. Nürburgring, Spa, Monza, and Targa Florio: all decisive victories for Porsche between 1969 and 1971, and proof that the 908 was capable of beating not only rivals such as the Alfa Romeo T33 or the Ferrari 512, but also the slickest 917s. Thus, when Porsche stopped using the 908 in competition at the highest level, the cars were sold to private teams such as Martini Racing and Joest Racing who continued to race them successfully until 1981.
