On September 23, 1913, Roland Garros achieved a historic feat by crossing the Mediterranean on board his small 80 hp Morane saulnier. After taking off at dawn from Frégus, he lost a part of his engine off Corsica (in the background of this picture). He landed at Bizerte after almost 8 hours of flight with only 5 liters of fuel in his tank!
