September 1936, Los Angeles. Invited to compete for the Thompson Trophy as part of the National Air Races, Michel Détroyat caused a sensation by winning the prestigious award, finishing well ahead of his American rivals. Among them was Earl Ortman, piloting his Marcoux-Bromberg—depicted here in second place.
