In keeping with the film's serious, realistic mood, the production team decided to set aside the Lotus Turbo Esprit's gadgets. Instead, they concentrated solely on the car's self-destruct mechanism. Thus, the white model with red stripes, bearing the registration OPW 654 W, was chosen to transport Bond to a villa on the outskirts of Madrid, where he was to spy on the dreaded Cuban hitman Hector Gonzales.
As Bond finds himself hunted down by Gonzales' henchmen after the latter's death at the hands of the ferocious, vengeance-seeking Melina Havelock, one of the men attempts to open Bond's car. Just then, the car self-destructs in a violent explosion, ending the threat and claiming the life of the reckless man.
