The 2002 Cayenne is not the first 4x4 by Porsche! For those who think that the brand will always remain confined to sports cars, and only recognize the Carrera 4S as integral traction, now they will have to deal with the 597 Jagdwagen!
The Porsche 597 was developed by Ferry Porsche himself, relying on the experiences of his father Ferdinand on Wehrmacht's Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen. The 597 are really close since the first prototypes were amphibious and equipped with a folding propeller.
From a set of classic specifications: small vehicle of simple design, with capabilities in all-terrain, rugged and reliable, Porsche offers a modern and already efficient vehicle, that many enthousiasts consider as one of the best military vehicle ever designed.
Unfortunately too ambitious and too expensive for the German army of the time, it eventually will not be retained, despite very superior capabilities to those of its competitors. Porsche will try to make the project profitable by selling a civilian version, the 597 Jagdwagen (literally hunting car) which only 71 copies were produced, immediately placing this model among the most sought after collectables.
