The Lancia Stratos HF is a rally *berlinetta* featuring a mid-rear mounted 2.4-liter V6 Dino engine; it was a multiple World Champion in the mid-1970s. Following Lancia's factory-backed years, the Stratos continued its career in private hands—notably with the French Chardonnet team, which entered the blue No. 4 car in the 1979 Monte Carlo Rally.

At the 1979 Monte Carlo Rally, Bernard Darniche and Alain Mahé achieved a legendary victory: after the race was long dominated by Ford Escort RS models, Darniche staged a comeback on the final night and ultimately won by a margin of just six seconds, securing the Stratos's last major top-level victory for Team Chardonnet.
