In 1973, Matra returned to Le Mans with a clear ambition: to secure a second consecutive victory following their success the previous year. Facing them, Ferrari fielded its formidable 312 PB cars, which dominated practice and claimed pole position.

Despite leading the race for fourteen hours, the Italian machines ultimately conceded victory to Matra. At the end of the 24 hours, Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse triumphed, finishing six laps ahead of the Ferrari driven by Carlos Pace and Arturo Merzario.
