At the 1971 Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG (No. 35), driven by Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz, pulled off one of the biggest surprises in touring car history. Prepared by the fledgling AMG outfit based on the massive 300 SEL sedan, it featured a bored-out 6.8-liter V8 engine producing approximately 428 hp and 620 Nm of torque. Nicknamed "Rote Sau"—or "Red Pig"—due to its livery and imposing size, it won its class and finished second overall, trailing only a much lighter Ford Capri. This sensational result marked the true beginning of AMG's sporting reputation, propelling the company to international fame.
