Abstract :

Published in January 2013 by Éditions ETAI, “VW Coccinelle, Populaire et Universelle” is a work produced by Xavier Chauvin, which takes up the fabulous history of the first car produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen in 1938, originally intended for to serve the ideological designs of the Nazi regime.

Over the years, the robust and enduring Volkswagen Beetle conquered the world and became an automotive icon par excellence and the symbol of the German economic miracle.
Produced from 1938 to 2003 in more than 21.5 million copies, the Volkswagen Beetle was originally designed by Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche at the behest of Chancellor Adolf Hitler, then head of the Third German Reich.

Over the years, the legendary German car overcame all economic and political difficulties to establish itself on the international automobile market, becoming the face of the hippie movement and the protesting youth of the 1960s and 1970s.

After a long career spanning nearly sixty years, the Volkswagen Beetle was replaced by the Volkswagen New Beetle (1998-2011) and the Volkswagen Beetle III (from 2011).

Well-known pen of the magazine Rétroviseur, Xavier Chauvin has already published about fifteen books at ETAI, including "Yacco, the oil of World Records" or "The Peugeot 404, the lioness of Sochaux", exploring the history of automotive in all its glory.
