A Porsche 911 sets a new altitude record at 6,734 metres

On 2 December 2023, Romain Dumas set a new world record by climbing to the top of the Ojos del Salado volcano in Chile, driving a heavily modified Porsche 911 on synthetic fuel. The team that supported the three-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner had to cope with extreme conditions. At altitude, the air was almost half as dense as at sea level, and temperatures hovered around -20°C.

‘I'll never forget this experience. It was incredible to be able to drive where no car had gone before,’ said Romain Dumas shortly after the descent. ‘No vehicle on land has done better than the 911. We reached the true summit of the western ridge of the volcano, we couldn't go any higher. This was the maximum altitude we could climb to. The team is proud to have achieved this feat. We would like to thank all our partners for their support and confidence. Without them, nothing would have been possible.

By way of comparison, you need to add 1,929 metres to the summit of Mont Blanc to obtain the altitude reached by the 911. The previous record, set in 2020, was 6,694 metres.

For the altitude record attempt, the team took a cautious approach, making the safety of the participants a priority. It took two weeks to acclimatise to the altitude. The team chose to climb a little higher each day. The cars, on the other hand, didn't need this time to adapt: the air scarcity detection system made it possible to adjust the fuel supply accordingly and optimise performance. Team members closely monitored their altitude, heart rate, sleep cycle and energy expenditure using smartwatches supplied by Tag Heuer. Two doctors also took part in the expedition to monitor changes in these parameters, given the geographical remoteness of the base camp and the risks associated with altitude sickness, thin air and freezing temperatures.

The final ascent began at 3.30 am on Saturday 2 December 2023. The team reached the summit of the volcano at 3.58pm.

Once at the top, the team enjoyed the view and immortalised the event with a photo. As with the ascent, the descent from the volcano was all about precision and caution. The team returned to base camp several thousand metres lower the following day, tired but proud.
