Ferdinand Porsche invented the first hybrid car. A gasoline engine generated electricity for the batteries of the 1901 Lohner-Porsche Mixte, developed by the then 25-year-old engineer. This model was the very first Porsche built in series, following the critical success of the all-electric Lohner No. 27, also designed by Porsche the previous year.

This hybrid car reached a top speed of 56 km/h, allowing it to break several speed records and even win the Exelberg Rally, driven by Ferdinand Porsche himself. In total, nearly 300 Lohner-Porsche chassis were sold up to 1906, in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations.

Another award: the Austrian prize for best automotive engineer for Porsche, and another recognition, a few decades later: the development of the famous Lunar Rover, NASA's lunar vehicle, is very clearly inspired by Porsche's brilliant design.
