After his victory in the Prinz Heinrich race, Ferdinand Porsche enjoyed a string of successes at Austro-Daimler. He was appointed managing director in 1916. But his past caught up with him in 1911 when he was asked to design a prototype for Emperor Franz Joseph. Ferdinand had, in fact, been Prince Franz Ferdinand's personal chauffeur during his military service in 1902! His knowledge of the aristocracy allowed him to design a vehicle particularly suited to the royal family. For example, since the emperor only bowed his head before God, the roof was so high that Franz Joseph could enter the passenger compartment without stooping. The vehicle also featured an electric cigarette lighter that reached the passenger compartment so the emperor could light his cigars. The coachbuilding company Ambruster was commissioned to build this very special Austro Daimler, based on a 14/28 chassis, and presented to the Emperor on behalf of the Austrian Automobile Club. Despite the car's many qualities, Franz Joseph maintained until his death that he preferred horses, believing they brought him luck.
