It was with the Austro-Daimler Sascha that Porsche's long tradition of competing in the Targa Florio, the demanding and challenging road race, began. This compact car, with its top-tier performance, was designed by Ferdinand Porsche as the precursor to a four-seater production model. It secured first and second place in its engine displacement class on its very first attempt in 1922.

The key to this success: exceptional handling and controlled fuel consumption, made possible by the vehicle's extremely low weight – just 598 kg. The car was commissioned by Count Alexander "Sascha" Kolowrat, a wealthy film producer and friend of Ferdinand Porsche. Kolowrat financed it, Austro-Daimler built it, and it achieved 43 victories in 53 races.

For Ferdinand Porsche, this demonstrated the capabilities of his creations under extreme conditions. He tries to impose the series production of the Sascha, but the financiers of Austro-Daimler do not support him. Porsche slams the door, too eager to devote himself to motor racing and to develop his master idea: the particular principle of the power-to-weight ratio as a key attribute of all sports cars.
