Steyr is best known as a weapons manufacturer when it converts to auto manufacturing. The firm does not hesitate to afford the services of an engineer with a well-established reputation and high financial standards, Ferdinand Porsche himself. He has just left Mercedes-Benz, and he puts all his experience of imposing cars into the design of the Steyr XXX.

The Steyr XXX is a standard limousine, produced in 2200 copies in different versions : covered, discoverable, but also taxi or ambulance. It is designed from A to Z by Porsche itself and is particularly efficient and robust. One can find copies in the German wehrmacht that invades part of Europe a few years later.

For now, it is the financial crisis of 1929. Steyr overcomes it with great difficulty and must separate from Ferdinand Porsche. Who in any case caresses the idea of ​​setting up his own engineering office, which he does very quickly by hiring some of his former collaborators, including Karl Rabe whom he met again at Steyr. He can now devote himself to his passion for light and sport cars.
