The Ferrari 512 S was developed in a rush at the end of 1969 to allow Maranello to challenge the Porsche 917 in the 1970 World Sportscar Championship. It was powered by a mid-rear-mounted 5.0-liter V12 engine with four valves per cylinder; for Le Mans, it featured a "long-tail" configuration designed to boost top speed on the Mulsanne Straight. At the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, none of the factory Scuderia Ferrari 512 S cars made it to the finish line—including the No. 5 car driven by Jacky Ickx and Peter Schetty, which crashed out of a race marked by difficult conditions. Only two privately entered 512 S cars completed the event, finishing fourth and fifth, while Porsche claimed its first overall victory with the 917 K.
