Real Model – Alpine A310 1600 VE 1972

The Alpine A310 1600 VE was the first production version of the A310, unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show as the successor to the A110. Designed as a 2+2 coupé offering more space and comfort than the *berlinette*, it retained Alpine’s core characteristics: a steel backbone chassis, lightweight polyester bodywork, a rear-mounted engine, and rear-wheel drive. Its low-slung design, penned by Michel Beligond, is distinguished by a long, sloping nose and six headlights faired in behind a single glass cover.

The 1972 VE version is powered by the 1,605 cc Renault 807-20 four-cylinder engine, sourced from the Renault 17 TS. Fed by twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, it produces 125 hp at 6,250 rpm and 146 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, the engine allows this Alpine—weighing approximately 840 kg—to reach a top speed of 210 km/h. Braking is handled by four disc brakes (ventilated at the front), while the Michelin XAS FF tires are wider at the rear, as befits a rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive car. Produced from 1971 to 1973 in this initial "VE" variant, the four-cylinder A310 has become a sought-after Alpine model thanks to its original styling—purer and lighter than that of the V6-powered A310 introduced in 1976.

Miniature – Alpine A310 1600 VE 1972 Alpine Blue 1/18 Norev (185400)

This 1:18 scale Norev model faithfully reproduces the 1972 Alpine A310 1600 VE in its iconic Alpine Blue finish. Bearing reference number 185400, it is crafted from die-cast metal.

The model accurately captures the distinctive features of the early A310: a front end with six headlights set behind a glass cover, slim bumpers, original wheels, a truncated tail, and a black engine cover. It features three opening elements—both doors and the rear hatch—allowing for a view of the interior and the rear-mounted mechanical components. The engine can be viewed by lifting the black rear compartment cover or by looking at the underside of the model.

It makes for a perfect companion to the 1:18 scale Norev A290 GTS, bringing together Alpine’s first major sports car of the 1970s and its modern-day electric successor.
