The year is 1954. A Corsair of the French Air Force must land in difficult conditions, facing the wind and... the sun! So far, so good... The aircraft pictured belongs to the 12th flotilla equipped with Corsairs F4U-7. One of the characteristics of the Corsair is the "W" shape of the wings. Why? In fact, the Corsair was intended for carrier boarding and the landing gear had to be very strong. But as the powerful Wright engine was driving a propeller with a huge diameter, it was necessary to have an important ground clearance and thus a very long landing gear (fragile consequently). The solution consisted in "folding" the wings downwards with this "W" shape to shorten the landing gear and to leave some clearance for the large 4m diameter Hamilton propeller!
