The Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 996), introduced for the 2001 model year, was the first 911 Turbo to feature full water cooling. It also ushered in a new generation of Turbo models that were more practical for daily driving, without sacrificing the performance that had built the model's reputation. Its design differs from the 996 Carrera through its significantly widened rear fenders, side air intakes, unique front bumper, and a fixed rear spoiler incorporating a movable element that deploys automatically at speeds above 120 km/h.
It is powered by the 3.6-liter "Mezger" flat-six engine, equipped with twin turbochargers and intercoolers. Derived from the architecture of the 911 GT1—winner of the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans—this engine produces 420 hp at 6,000 rpm and 560 Nm of torque from as low as 2,700 rpm. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission; a five-speed Tiptronic S automatic was available as an option.
With the manual transmission, the 996 Turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 305 km/h. It features red-painted, four-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers, all-wheel drive, and the PSM stability system. These components allow it to deliver exceptional traction in all conditions while remaining comfortable enough for long-distance journeys.
